English Learning

One of the many things we find so inspiring about our students is their dedication to learning. We teach at Ampil Peam Primary School where almost 180 students attend each morning. Their government requires attendance each day from 730-1130am. Then the children are dismissed back to their homes. Many of our students voluntarily attend a local NGO for 3 hours each day to learn English (Additional learning).

We teach three classes, starting at 2:30pm, and have approximately 70 students that faithfully attend from three different age groups. Our program is also voluntary. These children keep coming BACK to school because of their desire to continue their education. They know that one of the keys to social mobility/improvement is learning English. Through English learning these children have the opportunity to secure jobs beyond their rural community in areas such as tourism, entertainment, or hospitality; jobs that pay better but are more difficult to obtain without knowing English.

The majority of our students are in our third class (grades 5-6). They ride their bikes from their government school, to the NGO, and then back to the school for our program; their final learning of the day. In total, these students are spending more time in voluntary classes than in their mandatory government class. It’s these students’ commitment to learning that drives us to show up each day! If these children, who have the option to go home, play, work, or do any number of things are CHOOSING to show up each day, then the least we can do is show up for them.
